Beach Slang - Cheap Thrills on a Dead End Street

Following their debut EP, Beach Slang has come out blazing with their second EP Cheap Thrills on a Dead End Street. Beach Slang provides the classic pop-punk vibe without falling into a monotonous lull that can occur with some bands. Somewhat reminiscent of punk bands from the nineties, the sound that echoes from this EP is destined to make them stand out. Beach Slang is built up of members from other bands -- Weston, Crybaby, Ex-Friends -- but the way they are able to bring all those influences is great.
“All Fuzzed Out” leads in with the deep, raspy-punk voice of James Snyder, who makes sure he left
his unique stamp on the song. Guided with dominating drums and high energy guitar runs, the song remains amped throughout. Maintaining familiarity with the varied riffs of the guitar, the song keeps a feel much like the Goo Goo Dolls, which is definitely not a horrible comparison. “All Fuzzed Out” warrants a solid listen.
My personal favorite on the EP, “Dirty Cigarettes” has the vibe of a more popular punk song. The guitar shines through with an occasional improvised lick to keep it interesting and takes great initiative on the song allowing for easy entry by Snyder’s vocal prowess. Frankly, this is great to just let loose on. If you’ve had a bad day and need some quality music to let go of all the bullshit with, this will do it. So strap on your air guitar, or whatever is you like to do and jam along to forget, even just for a little bit.
Speaking of a high quality jam which deserves to be played loudly, “American Girls and French Kisses” might just be another highlight of the EP. Fueled by relatable lyrics -- “It’s Friday night and I’m in the basement/screaming out my lungs with my best friends” -- this is likely the most well-rounded song on Cheap Thrills on a Dead Street. The lyrics are consistent with man’s innate desire to escape into music, and through this song, anyone would be able to do that. I can think of countless times where after a long day, I have been in dire need of this song, its vibe and its freedom.
The shortest track on the EP, “We Are Nothing,” begins with a simpler, quieter introduction, the guitar is the focus, only to be joined shortly by Snyder on vocals. Feeling like a punk anthem or at least something any different person could identify with, the lyrics stick close to the title throughout. Although it isn’t consistent with Beach Slang’s self-proclaimed tagline, “guitar, bass and drums. Played loudly,” it provides the feeling I think they are aiming to achieve: Be different. It’s a good vibe, filled with obvious experience and is a nice change from the rest of the EP.
Listening to Cheap Thrills on a Dead Street is an exciting segue into a full-length album we hope to see from Beach Slang sooner rather than later. Their distinct style out of Philadelphia is sure to keep you intrigued, especially with the veteran aspects shining through. Beach Slang is an exciting project that will leave you wanting more…and when that happens be sure to hop to their site to stream the EP as many times as you want.
