Caught A Ghost is an up and coming band full of unique sounds that will keep you guessing with each track. This indie-electro-soul band headed by songwriter and producer Jesse Nolan has recently released their debut album Human Nature. The irony? You have probably heard them before on the TV shows Vampire Diaries, Suits, or Boardwalk Empire. Based out of East L.A., the group landed a gig at SXSW and it’s clear that will only be the beginning of their trailblazing sound.
Right away, their single “No Sugar In My Coffee” sends you into a place of careless ecstasy. The smooth soul that resonates throughout the song keeps you intrigued and eager to hear where they will take you next. When you listen, you feel yourself nodding until midway through when the beat drops out leaving the
listener yearning for more. The harmonies between Jesse Nolan and Tessa Thompson gives you those feel-good chills. It’s a perfect song to set up the rest of the album, as well as making you wish the song was just a little bit longer. No worries though, there is still the entire album left.
My personal favorite is the song “uuu,” since it brings back the knee-slapping, soulful feel from “No Sugar In My Coffee.” Providing more focus on Jesse’s vocal skills, you are pulled into the lyrics with his sleek range. Serving as a subtle love song, it leaves you wishing you were riding in your car with your windows down just taking life in. It shoots the soul into your veins and you are overcome with a blissful tranquility. I definitely recommend this song on one of those sweet, summer days.
As you feel the familiar back beat in each song, the final song on the album, “Get Louder,” provides an upbeat way to wrap up the album. Providing more of a jazz feel, you can’t help but imagine how incredible they must be live. Giving lyrics to incite action and change from within, “Who’s got your money now/ People get louder/ You don’t have to take it,” the band identifies with everyone’s struggles to deal with all the bullshit. You tap your foot, nod your head, and ride along with the progression of the song, as though he wrote the song just for you. It’s a fantastic song choice when you need a lighthearted pick-me-up for days when nothing seems to be going your way.
As a new listener, I was hooked from the start and never felt the desire to skip to that next song, a true testament to the production of the album. The band takes you on a ride you don’t want to get off of and sends you coasting into a state of relaxation. I found myself yearning for more and have found it easy to keep the album on repeat. The uniqueness that exudes from their hybrid sound will definitely make waves in the music world.
As newly acquired fan, I am aching for a live show. I can only imagine the wickedness that would ensue from a live show, with an opportunity for some added flare that can only be portrayed in that setting. Caught A Ghost will be a force to be reckoned with and that is why I cannot wait to see what’s next from them. Be on the lookout.
