The Generators, originally out of Los Angeles, are releasing their 10th studio album, Life Gives-Life Takes on May 5th, 12 days before their first show of the summer starting in San Francisco, California. From the moment I hit play on the first song “Gotta Be A Better Way” I was instantly transported back to the days I drove around while wearing my favorite Ramones t-shirt, jamming to Dead Kennedys, and killing the steering wheel drums. But man, I am going to need a new t-shirt for that. From the first song to the last, Life Gives-Life Takes will have you getting down on your favorite air guitar. These guys have been kicking ass since 1997 and this album shows that they don’t plan on stopping yet, bringing us a vibe close to the band’s original dirty and quick punk sound with a rock n’ roll kick.
“Goodbye California” tells the story of heartbreak on the beaches through quick riffs that keep the listener wondering what’s next. With lyrics like “Songs of yesterday in the rearview mirror/ Watching them fade away,” and “Running down this old highway/ Interstate of disarray,” the emotion of leaving a place and all its memories behind is clear and somehow still somber over the high-pitched solos.
Even “Heartbreak Beach” with its happier melody and rhythmic drumming tells a tale of despair. It keeps short-and-sweet upbeat guitar rhythms almost reminiscent of Sublime’s sound underneath heart-wrenching lyrics: “Now the beach seems so empty without you/ The waves are still breakin’ but my heart’s breaking too,” followed with “Just feelin’ the ocean breeze thinking how it used to be,” and “Heartbreak beach how can you be so cruel.” This one will have you back on the beach thinking of the summer love that got away.
The fourth song on the album, “Perfume & Poison,” holds a darker tone than the rest. Its lyrics “There’s a crack in the mirror and a lipstick smear/ There’s a knife under the pillow that’s covered in tears,” bring the listener to that one crazy ex that we’ve all had. A perfect transition from some of the lighter songs, “Perfume & Poison” is truly the essence of the punk rock “screw it” attitude.
These quick, two-minute songs marry their old school punk roots with rock n’ roll and are the perfect companion to any ears looking for their favorite classic punk bands reimagined. If The Ramones ever met Suicidal Tendencies and had a rock n’ roll baby, it would have turned out something like The Generators. Their devil-may-care attitude and the disregard for sugarcoating the emotions this album will rip out of you are what make it just plain right. Thanks to their new signing with Randale Records, they will be touring Europe this summer along with shows in the states with their U.S. label DC Jam.
