For all you Man Overboard fans, lead vocalist Zac Eisenstein just came out with a solo project called Farpoint. Their debut EP is titled Think About the Future, which is available now on iTunes digitally and Lost Tape Collective physically. Normally, you can catch Eisenstein singing and shredding on the guitar in his pop punk band, Man Overboard. However, his solo project features more of an electronic pop sound that you can groove along to. His new EP includes seven tracks, all with a similar electronic beat and grungy, auto-tuned vocals that often have an echo. All the songs are also similar lyrically, as they all pertain to a past or maybe current love interest.
The fifth track on the EP, titled “Are We Gonna Make It?” is one of the more interesting songs, as the beat is a little different from the other songs. Still
upbeat and fun, the song also has a rather loud and heavy feel to it. The techno beat is mixed with fun lyrics on a serious topic. In the song, Eisenstein talks about all of the problems with his significant other including him not pulling his weight in the relationship, and fighting often. The song seems a little hopeless as the chorus just repeats “Are we gonna make it?” However, he also talks about wanting to try to make things right, so maybe there’s a little hope after all.
The sixth track, “I Can Count,” is a little weaker than the rest of the EP. Although the beat is definitely one you can bob your head to, the lyrics and vocals aren’t the best. Eisenstein’s vocals come off a little whinier than usually, which makes the song harder to listen to. He complains about his past love interest not caring for him anymore, which is a difficult problem that we all may go through, but he honestly just sounds like a nagging ex-boyfriend. The song also features a girl talking in the background towards the end, repeating “I’ll totally hit you up later,” in a valley girl voice, which gets annoying after the first couple of times.
“Bring You Home,” is the first song off the EP, which was a good choice, because it will definitely get listeners not only interested, but out of their seats and dancing around. The sound is reminisce of most classic electro pop songs, with a simple, upbeat drum beat in the background over a really rad and fun synthesizer. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase “I think I love you/ Love you,” in a fun way, which really compliments the beat of the song. All of the elements work really well together, producing a lively, entertaining song that could easily be played at a party or sang along to in the car with the top down.
Although this album may be a little risky from the usual things Eisenstein is in, Think About the Future is definitely worth a listen. The EP is lacking some elements to make it amazing, but we should admire Eisenstein’s courage to step outside his normal sound to experiment with something new. Physical copies of the EP will be available at the Man Overcoming upcoming tour with All Time Low, so if you are at one of these shows and have a little cash to spare, you should pick up this EP. If you can’t make it to a show, you should definitely stream the album for free here.
Some Farpoint...
