I have spent a fair amount of time in recording studios to know how much time goes into recording music like metal or hardcore. The effort is a merit of its own right, especially when you’re a promising local band barely getting by. I know the struggle all too well. This is also one of the main reasons I respect metal and hardcore artists so much. Take a step back and just think how technical some bands are, such as Born of Osiris or I am Abomination. To think about the talent and time put into their songs is staggering. After acknowledging this, I used this stream of thought to review a promising band by the name of Fault Lines.
Just when you think you the scene is dying in your area, a local band that goes by the name of Fault Lines rises from the Southeastern’s own Chattanooga, TN. These six guys have been around for more than a couple years now and have released a fair amount of music already. We have Chris Blankenship on drums, Dylan Cheatham and Dan Wilwerth on guitar, Joe Burns on bass, Corey Pettit on scream vocals and Zack Wilson on clean vocals. Once again, they will be gracing us with a new release on January 26, 2016. It will be a six song EP called Such

is Life and I have had the pleasure to get an early sneak peek on it. I will start by saying the EP was very well done but I do have some comments to make, so without further adieu, let us dive in.
I will be reviewing three of the EP’s songs; my favorite, my least favorite, and one somewhere in between. The first song off the record just so happens to be my favorite, called “Equal Parts.” Compared to the rest, I think it’s the most well done. Starting off hard, the screaming vocals come in real clean and comprehensive. About 30 seconds in, Zack Wilson comes in with some incredible power cleans, while Corey accents him with some screams. This repeats until it transitions into a bridge. After the breakdown, the instrumentals just stop while some melodic synth plays in the background. This part is my favorite part because Zack begins to sing the chorus out “Whoa I know you’ve been/ Stuck inside this house” in a very soft tone, then kicks you in the face with a power vocals, singing “That’s crumbling.”
“Write Me Off” is the last song on the EP and unfortunately my least favorite. It’s not that it’s bad by any means, I just didn’t like it as the last song or as much as the other songs. It’s good but it doesn’t have an “it” factor about it, as it’s fairly generic with a typical, basic hardcore structure. Starting off with a very bouncy riff leading into a chorus is where Corey and Zack harmonize their screaming and singing. This continues until its starts building into a breakdown. The breakdown is actually the best part of this song, as leading into the breakdown Corey says “I’ve said everything I need to say/ You’ve got a mouth full of excuses/ Put my patience to the test” then cuing into the breakdown he screams “Don’t waste your breath.”
“Gypsy Blood” is somewhere between being awesome like “Equal Parts” and okay like “Write Me Off.” This being the second song on Such is Life, I expected it to keep my attention like “Equal Parts” did. They definitely accomplished that. Like the other two songs, it starts off having Corey come in with some really solid scream, leading into the chorus at a little over minute in. The clean vocals from Zack on the chorus were phenomenal. The chorus transitions into a bridge with chanting that repeats the chorus “We had a dream things would be better.” We end the bridge with Zack breaking out into some power vocals in the final chorus.
The only quirks I noticed were a couple of the songs were a little generic, but I am not the easiest person to impress. My biggest issue was every song sounded like there were an overload of effects put on the clean vocals, and not enough of the raw voice. This didn’t make the songs bad; it was just kind of disappointing. Zack’s cleans seem like they have some real raw power behind them.
Overall, it was a great EP and I was really pleased with Such is Life. They have a lot of potential and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. If you guys are interested go check them out; they released a music video for the song “Gypsy Blood.” If you like their EP, go like them on Facebook.
