Four Year Strong - Go Down In History
Daniel Harris | September 21, 2014
After a long cycle of touring and much-needed time off, Four Year Strong are back in surprising form with the release of their new EP Go Down in History. The Worcester, Massachusetts boys formed in 2001 and enjoyed moderate success before they became pop-punk giants with the successes of Rise or Die Trying and Enemy of the World in 2007 and 2010, respectively, but have receded from the limelight recently before emerging from the studio with their latest set of songs.
Building on the successes of Enemy of the World and 2009’s In Some Way, Shape or Form, FYS open Go Down in History with
“What’s in the Box?”, a familiar, high-energy kickoff to an EP that follows a similar track formula found on past releases. However, the sound that the band brings to this record stems from more refined rock sound than all-out punk vibes.
After jolting you into attention with the first track, the band drives home their new sound with “Living Proof of A Stubborn Youth” and the titular track, “Go Down in History.” Both of these tracks shed the classic FYS aggression and speed to reveal a more rhythmic and melodic heart to this release. The new direction brings an interesting (but by no means very fresh) element to the new pop-punk scene, sort of how like blink-182 almost went indie, but not as extreme of a transformation. Whether this means newer or bigger things for Four Year Strong or the pop-punk world, in general, or if this is just a band evolving as its members age and grow, it definitely doesn’t suck to be Four Year Strong right now.
Four Year Strong are currently touring and begin a nationwide tour ending in Buffalo just before Thanksgiving, giving the guys plenty of time to work on fleshing out their new sound over the Christmas break. Could this lead to a 2015 release? Please?
