Count Your Lucky Stars record label has a new and exciting band on deck, Free Throw from Nashville Tennessee. In their latest EP Lavender Town, their style ranges from fast, dance punk to chill rock with fun, mellow guitar riffs. Their songs are also spiced up with their harsher, grungier vocals and lyrics. All four songs on Lavender Town all stand out in different ways, but also tie together creating a fun, awesome EP.
Lavender Town starts off with “Slam Like the Best or Jam Like the Rest.” Without even listening, we can already tell this is going to be a fun song just based on the title. The song features energetic, upbeat drums and catchy guitar riffs that just make you want to dance. At the end of the song, everything but the drums cut out, intensifying the vocals to match with the heavy lyrics about disappointedly waiting around for someone who never comes.
The second song “Now Kith” brings the mood down to a much more mellow vibe. It starts with a short guitar solo reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Under the Bridge. Their vocals also mellow out much more for the first half of the song, but pick up later restoring to their classic raspy, grungy sound. The vocals compliment the relaxed beat, with subtle echoes in the background. The bass line weaves its way through the drumbeat, which becomes noticeable through the small breaks in beat. All the different components of the song come together to create not only a chill song to groove to, but also my personal favorite song off the EP.
The EP’s namesake probably has the most intense lyrics out of the four songs. The beat is very laid back, while the vocals are a lot harsher. Screaming the lyrics “Tonight I’ll see you in my dreams/ I’ll know that is it fake/ My life is now my nightmare/ Please don’t let me fucking wake,” it is clear that this is an emotionally rough song. The song continues with the repeating line, “And I can sleep forever,” which is followed by a lax breakdown with a soothing electric guitar in the background.
The last song “Pennsylvania Dutch,” is a great closer for the EP. It starts off with a relaxed guitar solo, then picks up with a fun, groovy beat. The guitar riffs almost sound more like surf pop/rock like, which makes it easy to dance to. They contrast it, though, with their raspy, screaming vocals and heavy drumming that add an interesting twist. The last minute of the song repeats the line, “I just don’t understand why,” with similar subtle echoes from their song “Now Kith.”
Count Your Lucky Stars has definitely scored with this new band Free Throw. Their EP is fun, groovy, and brings some new stuff to the table. Their full album isn’t scheduled to release until later this summer, but their EP could definitely be put on repeat for the next couple of months until then.
