Manneguin Pussy - Gypsy Pervert
Evan Cowles |
Gypsy Pervert is the debut album from NYC trio Mannequin Pussy. After the band signed to Tiny Engines earlier this year, the record was reissued, remastered, and pressed on vinyl for the first time. The band, originally a duo made up of childhood friends Marisa Dabice and Thanasi Paul, expanded to a three-piece for their full-length. This album is all sorts of crazy and is perfect for those who love female-fronted punk bands.
“Sneaky Nips” is the perfect high-speed start to this album. With an opening 15 seconds that make you want to run a mile a minute, you can’t help but feel amped up already from this album. With fast
drums and guitar, Mannequin Pussy sets the tone for the entire album. Dabice’s shouted vocals soon kick in, along her repeated heavy breathing and you’ve got the most excitement of your entire life. I don’t know a better way to describe it.
Mannequin Pussy keeps the punk-juices flowing throughout with the third track “Clue Juice”. The sexual aspect of this song is very strong. Dabice explains that she’s “heard it all before”, meaning that she’s gotten the same lines from the same guys over and over. But, if they come with her, they’re sure to have a good time. Dabice won’t shy from much, made evident with the repeated lines, “well, if that's the way you want it / Well, then that's the way it is.”
The band makes a complete 180 with the fourth and following track “Clit Eastwood”. First off, this is easily my favorite song title from any band. Second, you can definitely hear a Western style in the intro, as they slow their musical attack waaaaaaaaaaay down. Here, Dabice shows off her true vocal skills, and if you’re not careful, you’ll actually find yourself swaying along to this song. You can almost gather a sultry feeling off this track with the way her vocals are delivered.
Overall, this 19-minute masterpiece that has the sound to be part of the early Tony Hawk video games’ soundtracks does not disappoint one bit. While there are basically two aspects to this album, the fast skate-punk stuff and the slow, almost enticing songs, it’s still wonderfully put together. The way the songs transition into each other is flawless. I’ll admit, I was at first turned off by the name and during my first listen through. But the more I listen to this album, the more I thoroughly enjoy it. What a fantastic debut. I recommend everyone pick this up if you can. While they don’t have a Tour Dates tab on their Facebook, their Bandcamp does list a few tour dates for October, so check them out if you ever get the chance!
