Marmozets

Marmozets’ self-titled EP is a blend of chaos and unpredictability, with sensible and sincere undertones. This four song release captures what this young band can do without the daunting task of creating a full-length album. I personally have grown to like the shorter releases myself keeps things fresh and new without forcing artist to write filler tracks.
There are no filler tracks on this release, it comes out of the gate with "Born Young and Free," with attitude gripping you by the seat of your pants, taking you through a whirlwind of sound. The tune starts with a pumping chant,
then moving on to tastefully spastic guitar work, they crush you with a breakdown all before they bring the hook back around. By the end of this track you’re not sure what just hit you, but you know you want it to happen again.
Becca MacIntyre's vocals transition so smoothly from beautiful siren to sultry wail and back again throughout the track “Why Do You Hate Me?”. Marmozets have a vibe reminiscent of early 2000 "emo" style with a heavy, sometimes "grind" like sound. The hooks for these songs can easily get trapped in your head but thats doesn't seem to be the main focus. Underneath the catchy melody lies some ripping guitar leads and bombastic drums.
"Captivate You," the new single, is easily my favorite track off this release, it is a haunting anthem. Opening up with a soft guitar intro right before they kick it into overdrive directly into the chorus line “And I will captivate you/ With everything I’ve got” and that is exactly what they do. This song moves from chorus to chorus, separating them with progressively interesting guitar work, and never returning to the same verse structure.
"Move, Shake, Hide" is a dark, edgy dance-type tune where the guitars come out and really display their power. This release seems like a step in the right direction for this band, and not nearly as "math rock" as their previous release. They are able to almost hide their crazy guitar parts in between the catchy hooks and melodies of these songs, proving that with this EP their songwriting has matured. These youngsters from West Yorkshire are hitting the U.S. on Vans Warped Tour July 4th through August 3rd, and I highly recommend checking out their set if you are attending.
