Mrs. Skannotto - Outlier

Danielle Leonard | July 21, 2014

Though the days of ska may seem to have come and passed, some bands choose to revert back to a style that is upbeat and sure to get a crowd on their feet. Based out of Rochester, NY, Mrs. Skannotto is a high-energy ska band that utilizes complex guitar riffs, powerful drum beats, a bright horn section, groovy bass lines, and aggressive vocals. The band has recently released their fifth LP titled Outlier. It seamlessly combines third-wave ska with punk rock and reggae, creating a unique and appealing sound.

The album’s namesake “Outlier”

especially stood out to me. It begins with intense vocals, then smoothly transitions into a very reggae-inspired portion with smoother vocals and a more mellow instrumentation.  I think it was a very good way to start off the album because it immediately captures the listener’s attention, and then retains it as the song progresses, with its many varying style shifts.

Recently, Mrs. Skanotto covered Peter Gabriel’s “Games Without Frontiers,” giving a very interesting ska twist to such a classic song. The interpretation is daring and refreshing. While many bands cover songs in the exact style as the original, Mrs. Skanotto chose to take a chance and created a unique song. Guitarist Mike Frederick has an extremely impressive guitar solo, which begins at the four-minute mark and continues for the next few minutes, showing the listener his talent and how he was able to interpret this guitar solo in his own way.

I really appreciated the songs with a prominent horn section, such as “Entropy,” which sounds rather somber at points, but is able to get you on your feet with the upbeat brass section. It’s like an emotional love song that doesn’t make you sad because you just want to dance instead. I feel as though vocalist, Joe Harmon, really sets this band apart from the rest, giving this song a very soulful vibe due to his deep and passionate vocal style.

They are currently touring around the Northeast under their new full-length release, so if you’re looking for a high-energy punk band, look no further than Mrs. Skannotto.  They add their own flavor to what would be considered traditional third-wave ska music, effortlessly meshing genres, setting themselves apart from the rest.
