New Empire are a pop punk four piece from Sydney, Australia that formed in 2005. To date, the majority of their success has been in their native country where they have opened for the likes of Good Charlotte, Switchfoot, and Owl City. Their hit song “One Heart/Million Voices” unleashed them to a wider audience when it was used in Australian TV coverage of the London 2012 Olympics. The band is now looking to crack the US market with their latest EP, In A Breath.
Lead vocalist Jeremy Fowlers’ voice is gentle and soothing throughout. The opening track “Tale of Jonah” sets the tone for the rest of the EP, and from here it’s easy to see why this band has been compared to acts such as The Fray, The Script, and One Republic.
The band’s first single “Say It Like You
Mean It” has an 80’s feel to it. This is a great choice to introduce the band to new listeners, and potentially new fans. It captures their sound and gives you a taste of the heartfelt lyrics that can be heard throughout the whole record.
The title track “In A Breath” is a tale of loss and reunion, backed with a soft piano melody that is pleasing to the ear and reminiscent of a Vanessa Carlton track. The track is delivered in such a way you can’t help but feel the raw emotion.
“Fallen Soldiers” feels like the anthemic track of the record with a chorus that gets stuck in your head. While listening to this track, you can picture the live performance with the crowd singing at the top of their lungs “We are the fallen soldiers/ We’re coming back from war/ To silence the guns forever/ To silence the guns forever.”
This record is not one to get you pumped before a night on the town, but more one to relax to whilst nursing a hangover the following day.
In A Breath has a US release date of 29 April 2014, consisting of 10 tracks plus a bonus acoustic version of “Relight the Fire.” At present, the band has no information regarding any upcoming tours but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them doing the festival circuit this year.
