Orenda Fink - Holy, Holy

Brooke Thomas | July 29, 2014

Songwriter Orenda Fink, from Birmingham, AL, was first in a duo with Azure Ray from 2001 to 2004, then moved on to the band Now It’s Overhead. She released her first solo album in 2005 called Invisible Ones. Orenda did a few other projects before releasing her second solo album Ask the Night in 2009. She went into the studio to record Blue Dream in December 2013, which will be out in just a few weeks.

The single from Blue Dream, “Holy Holy,” has been premiered by American Songwriter. This song is one I can definitely relate to as far as the emotion and feeling of it. Much of her music revolves around mortality, and “Holy Holy” was written following the death of her dog. Two lines that, in my opinion, are very deep, “We come into this world all alone/ And we leave with not much more”, are very true. We come into the world alone, and sometimes have to walk alone, and really we leave the world alone as well. Orenda literally wept while writing the song. I love the way she explains why she wrote it, “How can we love so deeply when we know that all relationships will end in death? And what happens to love then?”, in her situation- literally, and in mine- figuratively. When I listen to the song and look back at her questions, I think to myself, ‘Well, what does happen to love after the relationship ends in death? Does it stick around or does it go with the relationship?’ I suppose it depends on the person and situation. Both her words and lyrics have such deep meaning and I love it!

Fink’s album Blue Dream will be released August 19 via Saddle Creek and can now be pre-ordered on CD and vinyl on the Saddle Creek online store. Those that order the deluxe LP will also receive a Blue Dream journal which are limited to 100 and are handmade and inscribed by Orenda.
