It's been a month since Parahoy set sail to the Bahamas. And can I just say that "livin' in the real world" is not fun, and I won't be one of you, I just wanna be back in paradise that was the Parahoy cruise. Between the anticipation of boarding the ship Friday afternoon and leaving-- some of us in tears-- Tuesday morning, tons of amazing and hilarious things happened. Allow me to fill you in.
DAY UNO:
Well, more like evening uno. Paramore kicked off the cruise with a fantastic, energizing set once we were an hour out to sea. They opened with Riot!'s "For a Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic" that was followed up by the classic from their first album, "Emergency." Others were "Pressure," "Ignorance," "Caught Myself," "Now," "Brick By Boring Brick," "Fast in My Car," and "That's What You Get." During the set, Hayley -- who is also a fab public speaker -- took someone's Parahoy sailor cap and told us about the ups and downs the band went through a couple years ago, and how grateful she was that we got them out into the sun because "it felt like death outside and thank you for bringing us back to life" from their slushy Nashville winter.
Of course, the speech was followed up with "In the Mourning" which bled into Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide." It all made sense that the band's "break up" and rockiness was the meaning to "In the Mourning."
At one point in the set, Hayley pointed to a dude and said, "That dude's got a rainbow beard! That's so cool!" This would later be the biggest inside joke of all time #1. The band cheered when the set ended and demanded an encore, to which they naturally obliged with the two songs "Escape Route" and "Misery Business." Two lucky fans were dragged up on stage to sing along side Hayley for "Misery Business," and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. Luckily, I got some pretty legit shots of the show to compensate.
After that, my beau, Eric, and I made our way to the all you can eat buffet where we first encountered "washy washy, happy happy!" We were perplexed and just went "ooooooookaayyyyyy" and stuck out our hands. Little did we know this would become the biggest inside joke of all time #2. Unfortunately, the rest of my night was ended abruptly due to very rocky seas that caused the ship to sway. I got that "reading while in the car" feeling times ten, so I had to take dramamine and pass out.

DAY DOS:
Luckily, I woke up feeling fine. I spent the middle of the day in the hair salon, just a nice cut and color for paraprom that night. After I came out of the salon, it was time for the Paraoke contest. I walked out and a guy handed me and a few others a pick from Jeremy's pick throwing qualifiers that were last night. I met up with Eric, who told me about Rainbow Beard's winning of the belly flop contest while I was in the salon, (judged by Doug Benson and Jeremy Davis). Finally, nine lovely contestants walked out on stage where Paramore sang the night before, and were all pumped to sing their selection of a Paramore song. The choices were "The Only Exception," "Misery Business," "Still Into You," "Ain't It Fun," "Decode," "That's What You Get," "Crushcrushcrush," "Pressure," and

The prom was wild... and really hot. We stayed outside on the deck for most of the time. We had a random guy take our photo, and it's a photo I will probably never see. We were there for about 30 minutes when we went back to change and grab a bite to eat at the Garden Cafe. There, we ran into Jeremy (bassist/keyboardisy) and Carah (singer) from Shiny Toy Guns. I patiently waited to see if Carah minded if I spoke with her about the cruise and her experiences of it so far over lunch or dinner the next day. She was taking fan photo after fan photo, signing things, and hugging fans. I walked up to her and introduced myself. She commented on my hair color and asked to touch it. Yeah, that's right. Carah caressed my locks. She was down to chit chat with me, but Jeremy didn't seemed too inclined to an in-person interview, and resorted to giving me his email instead. Unfortunately, I never heard back from them. (Insert very, very sad face here).
DAY TRES:
It was island day and I was stoked to check out the Great Stirrup Cay. A lot of people had already left, and my beau and I left around 11 after getting breakfast. When we got to the island, I was a wee bit disappointed. Though the water was a gorgeous shade of teal-blue, the island was a concrete rock with very coarse sand. Eric and I made the best of it and we went snorkeling. We saw all kinds of amazing fish, sea urchins, and eels. Unfortunately, I didn't put sun screen on in time, and we both got hella burned... like couldn't walk right sun burned. Plus side is I found tiny seashells that you don't see on US coasts, so I got my personal Parahoy beach souvenir for the trek home.

We returned to the boat, sun burned and sandy, and took a VERY chilly shower and got ready to see Paramore's final evening show on the cruise. Hayley came out in a black leather jacket, a sparkly, midriff halter top, mom shorts that no one else could rock, star patterned tights, and white chucks. They jumped right into the set with "One of Those Crazy Girls." A few songs within their set were Paramore live rarities such as "Franklin," "Let This Go," and "Conspiracy." Hayley even had to comfort a few that were sobbing during "Franklin." They also played "Decode," (which "is a song that has nothing to do with Twilight," according to Hayley), "crushcrushcrush," "Hello Cold World," "Proof," "Miracle," "Turn it Off," and of course what would a Parahoy cruise be without the holiday, uke infused "Interludes?" They came back for an encore of "Let the Flames Begin" that led into Hayley rolling around on stage, singing her Lord's prayer, which naturally fell into "Part II."
The rest of the evening was a relaxed one since we were so sun-toasted. I passed out pretty early to the sounds of, not the ocean, but my beau watching Django Unchained next to me on my laptop.
DAY QUATRO
How bittersweet. It was the last day on the Parahoy cruise. We had a slow start due to our stiff, sunburned skin not wanting to stretch at all. We grabbed a late breakfast and chilled out on the shaded upper pool deck for a while. We kicked it on our balcony for most of the afternoon and waited for the Paramore Q&A. We made our way to the pool deck around 5pm to listen to all the stories Paramore would be sharing and all the random fan questions they'd be answering.
Here are a few things I bet you didn't know about Hayley:
• She would love to jam with N*Sync and her huge closet was covered with their posters as a teen
• The last song she'd ever play would be "Conspiracy"
• She cleans, organizes her things, unpacks, then gets coffee as soon as she gets home from tour
• Hayley loves to collect birdhouses and vintage salt & pepper shakers, and of course, odd socks
• Believes all bands should play small venues and play Warped Tour, and sleep where it's uncomfortable since it'll make you appreciate the art
• Her biggest accomplishment is her close-knit family. She'd been through three divorces ("not my own, obviously," she jokes), and learned a lot about love
• One of her bad habits is stressing about her voice, especially if she realizes she's hoarse after a show
• She told a story about how Zach wrote an "ABC" paper for school and when he got to "F" he wrote Fueled by Ramen because Paramore just got signed to it. His teacher told him it wasn't meant to be a fictional paper and he got points deducted for it
• Hayley was being a nightmare to her mom while on the Acceptance tour. Her mom made her pull out of the tour a week early and Hayley claims she is still embarrassed about it to this day
• If she was on a deserted island, she would've kept her laptop, her phone (she LOVES Twitter), and her love. While on the cruise, she decided a book, a journal, and a guitar were better picks
• Hayley knew the most words to a Spice Girl song

And some things about Jeremy:
• The last song he'd want to play is "All I Wanted"
• After tour, Jeremy says the first thing he does is use his own bathroom
• He accidentally hit Hayley on stage with his bass head while spinning around. Her hair got knotted in the pegs and Hayley head-banged it out
• He keeps and collects everything his fans give him. There's a whole room dedicated to fan mail and art
• His advice to young Paramore fans is to love each other. He wants them to grow up fine and safe, and that high school can seem like it never ends. When he sees young fans, he really hopes they're connecting with them
• His biggest accomplishment is being a father, and that he made a baby "because that's hard to do!" He mentioned she sleeps all the time
• His bad habit is eating a lot while on tour and staying up too late. He even joked, "I watch you guys (Parahoy cruisers), kinda creepy... but I eat food while I do it."
• He wants to play a show in front of the pyramids
• He collects flags from every place he visits
Last but not least, things about Taylor:
• The first thing he does after a tour is sit on his back porch
• If he were to switch roles with someone in Paramore, he'd like to sing, but preferably would like to play drums
• Taylor told a funny story about finding a band name. "One time, we went to Taco Bell, and we were like, 'All right guys, we gotta find a band name.' It was super serious, my mom was there. We asked the guy at the Taco Bell counter and he said, 'Oh gosh, you should call it Hidden Corporate Messages.' And we were like, 'Well, we'll keep looking.' Hidden Corporate Messages is still available!"
• He used to collect gnomes, but it was short lived
• As a pre-show ritual, he eats basically everything, as well as do a group huddle and prayer
• If he had to save one Paramore song from being deleted forever it'd be "Fast in My Car," or "My Heart"
• During a zombie apocalypse, he'd go to Jeremy's house
• His biggest accomplishment is staying in touch with his closest friends. His relationships take a lot of work due to being gone so much, but he's thankful for them and feels it's important and takes effort for those relationships
• His bad habit is performance issues and gets down on himself because of it, especially if he messes up on a lot of notes
• A phrase that keeps him going is "It's just a spark, but it's enough, to keep me going." He turned to Hayley and thanked her for the line
• He feels a true friend is someone that can love you for you because we are all different, and someone that can show you grace for your mistakes because they will happen
• Part II was an opportunity they had to take. He wrote something similar to "Let the Flames Begin" while on tour. mewithoutYou writes part two's and as mega fans of the band, they decided to use that method
• His go-to artist that week was Miley Cyrus
• He collects food from his travels, but it never stays with him
After the Q&A, Eric and I hustled to the Stargazer Theater to catch Doug Benson's last show. Jacob Sirof opened for him yet again, and I've made friends with a fellow cruiser, Eric Tomme, who graciously let me use his whole second show recording. Check it out if you missed it, and others, watch and relive it!

Trust me, I was pretty bummed I didn't get to interview Shiny Toy Guns about the cruise, but I promise I didn't fail entirely. I was able to talk to Jacob Sirof over the phone and got to see what he thought about all these crazy teenagers with hot moms. At one point, I think he was interviewing me.
You mentioned in an act you were on a Weezer cruise not too long ago. Which cruise was your favorite?
The Weezer cruise. It’s hard to pick favorite. Weezer is my favorite band, so probably Weezer. I didn’t know Paramore going into it. I got into Paramore though, bought their latest record when I got back.
Was there a significant difference between cruises?
Huge. The Parahoy cruise was much younger. There were kids with their parents, lots of lesbian couples that you definitely didn’t see on the Weezer cruise. Everyone was drinking all the time on the Weezer cruise. There’s a different looking crowd, and a different fan base.
How did you spend your time on the Parahoy Cruise when you weren’t performing?
Just did a lot of hanging out. (laughs) Drinking, eating, getting high with Doug Benson… Just enjoying hanging out and music, of course, listening to tons of music.
Did you go to the island?
Totally. It was fun. Just did some swimming.
Did you go snorkeling or anything?
Yeah, I’ve never done that. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. Did you?
Yeah, my boyfriend and I did. The waters were gorgeous and crystal clear, and it was really fun. We saw cool fish.
I’ve never been anywhere tropical, like Hawaii, I’ve never been on a cruise. I never thought I would go on a cruise, but I got to twice, three weeks apart. I did Weezer last minute. Doug asked if I’d do the Parahoy one with him, too.
Well, here’s to a virtual high-five because I had never been on a cruise, never been out of the country, and it was my first time seeing Paramore live.
Are you like, a huge fan of them?
I like them a lot, but I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan. There were some other folks on the boat that could take the cake for that. If I didn’t like them enough, I wouldn’t have gone, though.
Yeah. I bought their newest record when I got home and found myself getting really into it. I felt like pussy listening to it in the car, I’d turn it down at stoplights. (laughs)
Yeah, their newest record sounds way different from their older stuff.
I listened to some of their other stuff on Spotify but I didn’t get into it as much. Their new record is way more pop.
Definitely. Some fans were bashing them for the change.
Oh yeah, I bet. Ain’t It Fun has even got some R&B to it.
Your Facebook post hinted you might have a crush on Hayley. Did you get to meet her?
Who doesn’t have a crush on Hayley? I didn’t have much experience with her prior to the cruise. I heard her sing a Muppet’s song with Weezer called “Rainbow Connection" and that was my only exposure to her. But when they came onto stage to play, it’s hard not to fall in love with her.
True that.
But she knew Doug, and I chilled backstage at the second show with him and watched it there. My encounter with her was brief, maybe 20 seconds. But you’ll like this. She totally skipped the handshake and went straight for the hug, and then went off to probably give a million other people hugs.
Oh yeah, I’m jealous. I would’ve loved to meet her.
Yeah. She was super sweet and I got a hug. (laughs) I didn’t get a photo with her unfortunately, but I got a photo with Tegan and Sara, so that was cool.
Bummer, but that’s legit! So about that though, how did you get to open for Doug?
It’s funny because it probably looks like we are best buds because I did those two things with him. I’ve known him through comedy, but I’ve never worked with him until per his request. He knew I was Weezer fan and he invited me and it went well and then we did Parahoy. Doug pretty much brought me, a big thanks to him. I had worked with him before in San Francisco for a week before and that’s where I live so it was no big deal, but this was my first time traveling with him. He’s super friendly.
I also heard that you and Doug Benson were stopped by the drug dog on the way out of customs when we got back to Miami. Is that true? What happened?
How did you hear about that?
There’s a Parahoy group on Facebook and someone said Doug got sniffed out by the drug dog and you did, too. I guess it was someone behind or in front of you that said it. Why, was that just a Facebook rumor?
It happened. (laughs) Nothing came of it. It was relatively painless. It was intense, but I knew I had nothing to worry about, and I’m pretty sure Doug thought the same. One of the guys there was giving him a hard time and another officer recognized him and said, “He’s cool.” I guess it’s a good thing when you are famous for being funny. It just ended up costing us 20 minutes. It was scary at first, but then it was an inconvenience because they search all your stuff and pack it back in super messy. Not sure why they took me. (laughs). They never explained why they took me. Why’d they pick me? Maybe they asked if I was with Doug and I said yes? I don’t remember. I don’t know why they thought we were together. We weren’t holding hands. I’m not sure why I was taken in. (laughs).
I’m glad you guys came out of it alive and nothing went wrong. Thank you so much Jacob!
Thanks!

He seems like such an sarcastic ass on stage, right? Nah, he's a legit guy. It was really awesome being able to talk to him in such a casual way about the cruise.
Right after watching the comedy hour, Eric and I decided to catch the last show after grabbing a bite. mewithoutYou was already well into their set when we got there, but that didn't waiver a decision to leave. When the stage lights flashed onto the audience, I noticed a familiar orange-haired pixie fluttering about in the left mezzanine with her New Found Glory beau Chad, and bandmate Taylor. In the second to last song of the set, I glanced up and noticed she was gone, but moments later she reappeared on stage to sing with her favorite band.

The next morning, we managed to pack our things and eat the last Garden Cafe breakfast before we all went home. I sat in the car and admired my photos and reminisced, and had the tender realization I should put on a lot more sunscreen when in tropical islands, especially if there is a seven hour drive ahead of you.
Here's to Parahoy II: Rainbow Beard's Revenge. Washy, washy, happy, happy, smiley, smiley... all the time!

"Emergency." All of the contestants did a wonderful job, but it was quickly narrowed down to three by the crowd's vote.
First up was Taylor, a wee 14 year old girl with dark red hair. She was a nervous wreck, but adorably so, but that didn't stop her from blowing us away with her cover of "Still Into You." Finalist number two was Jarvis Latimore and he sang "Ain't It Fun." He had such a great personality and his performance was so fun and he got the crowd pumped, and Paramore too! All three of them got up and started dancing and clapping, and Hayley even shook her booty a bit. Sean Murray was the third finalist and he killed his performance. He sang "Decode" in Hayley's register which, to me, reminisced Kyle Pavone from We Came As Romans, but Hayley said she felt he sounded like Anthony Green of Circa Survive. Taylor York even got up and helped him out on a "microphone-stand guitar." Sean also has his own band, Fancy Reagan, if you wanna check it out!
Right after the show, Eric and I went to check out Doug Benson's stand up. Jacob Sirof was his opening act, and he did not disappoint. Both comedians had us rolling with laughter, and there was not a shortage of lude, crude, and highly offensive humor. Directly after that, we caught the middle of the Shiny Toy Gun's set, and luckily, I was able to hear some of my favorite songs like "Major Tom (Coming Home)," "Le Disko," "Rainy Monday," and "You Are the One." We were able to catch a few songs from Tegan & Sara's set, but we left early to get ready for Paraprom. We packed the fancy dress and suit, so why not go?!
