Roadkill Ghost Choir - In Tongues
Brooke Thomas | September 10, 2014
Roadkill Ghost Choir, an American rock band from the heart of central Florida, make unsettling and powerful rock music much like Tom Petty. After the release of their debut album Quiet Light in 2013, a handful of opportunities made their way to the band. They opened for like-minded group Band of Horses on a national tour and were awarded slots last year at the Governor’s Ball, Shaky Knees and Austin City Limits festivals. In early 2014, the band was invited to perform on the David Letterman Show. In late August, the band released their sophomore LP In Tongues.
The track “Hwy,” with its wandering instrumentals and beat, would fit well with an amazing video which depicts a guy finding his way in the world. The song’s mood makes it perfect for traveling at any pace you choose. It’s got a great vibe to it!
Another standout is “Down and Out.” Even though its lyrics are hard to understand in the first few plays, the way vocalist Andrew Shepard sings the song’s title is chilling and beautiful. Because of this, I listened to this track until I could understand everything being sung.
The seven-minute-long “A Blow to the Head” starts off slow and establishes an almost-creepy atmosphere. As time goes by, the song seems to tell the story of someone going to “war” with someone or a situation. Because the track is one of the longest on the album, it doesn’t stick to one mood or tone, making the “war” it describes more interesting.
The last song I really want to highlight is “One Enemy.” It has a definitely “older” sound to it -- but it’s a welcome reminder of bands from another time. The drums and guitar play a central role in the song’s direction, with the song’s riffs being one of the best elements on display. Despite the heavier instrumentation, “Enemy” has some softer vocal passages that are a perfect contrast to the background noise.
Roadkill Ghost Choir isn’t a band I’d normally listen to, but In Tongues’ really caught my attention and I still haven’t grown tired of it. The album is available as a digital download, a CD, or a single vinyl in a variety of bundle packages. They are currently on tour in support of this release; the full list of dates can be found Here. Given the unique sounds on this album, I think they’d be a cool band to see live!
