Scribble Victory - Confidence
Katie McClure | September 22, 2014
October 10th in Dorey. For an excellent band to listen to during those chill drives down scenic roads, I recommend you break out an album from Scribble Victory. If you prefer live performances the gig schedule is posted on their site. Be forewarned, Scribble Victory enjoys hard-to-read fonts and even jokes about it on their facebook page.
The first song I listened to, "Eternal Student" from Confidence, was a great introduction to their works and in fact the most highly promoted song on their new album. You can find it on their home site and on their Youtube page. The entirety of the song is encapsulated in a simple line "Keeping distance so I don't impose.” With this, the song is melancholic and sweet; all about having an almost unseen patience in a romance that hasn't even begun. The song is essentially a treasure trove of wonderful lyrics and melody. As I listened to this song, I got a sense of a calm, like a dim day before it pours.
"Stalemate,” is a song about a romance on the brink of tipping. The rhythm is repetitive and catchy while the lyrics give it a sweet edge. The hint of the unique drumming style and a tambourine perk the music up into a kind-of indie song. Faster paced and louder than most of their songs, "Stalemate" was the first song from Confidence to premiere. Though not my favorite of Scribble Victory's music, the song is still a fine one to have in their album and a good way to change up the pace from most of their seemingly more mellow compositions.
A self-deprecating example of literature is Scribble Victory's new song, "I Could Name More.” Even while it lists flaws such as being "obsessive" and "needy, dependent, self-conscience," the song still goes on to say that the vocalist won't focus on this list since it "won't change anything," giving it an overall upbeat vibe that suits the band well. As I listened, I found myself imagining an old music video of mirrors breaking and the band members walking away. It gave a kind of clichêd, but still welcome sense to me.
Confidence, like Scribble Victory's first album, should soon be found on the band's Facebook and Bandcamp pages, and can already be found on the Muddy Paw site. The band has put forth a name-your-price option for the downloading of their music and I urge fans to support the band. As for merch, it doesn't seem to exist as of yet, but if you want to be one of those obsessed groupies, I suppose that won't stop you from making some yourself, so have at it! All their upcoming gigs are posted on their site along with their first album Self-Titled. Go check it out.
Scribble Victory demonstrates a kind of mellow sound in their new album Confidence that makes me think of Across the Universe; they are the return of the revolutionaries. They describe themselves as an acoustic-pop duo and they hail from Derby, UK. The members are Jamie Thompson and Thomas Ward, whom each play an impressive array of instruments. While listening to them, it's impressive how well they harmonize with one another without the music being so overly complicated that it takes the listener out of the experience. Confidence's release date was set to be Tuesday, September 9th and the release gig is set for Friday,
