Self Defense Family - Duets

Ashlee Castellano | October 1, 2014

It’s time to defend your ears and stop listening to the repetitive, frilly lyrics found on the radio and put all your attention towards Self Defense Family’s new EP Duets. I was lucky enough to get my sweaty hands on it. My hands aren’t sweaty all the time,  but when melodious tunes play through my ears, I tend to get really nervous. Despite the initial jitters, I’m looking to hire someone to find me a far-off place where I can jam to “Location Scout” all day.

That song starts off with a steady guitar rhythm and smooth vocals that’ll get you ready to sit back and kick off your shoes with a glass of wine in hand (or water, no

judgment here). The vocals will send chills through your spine as you play along with your air guitar alongside the rest of the track’s flowing instrumentals. This track is a little bit like falling in love all over again; “Location Scout” can make the welcome tingly feeling return to your insides like it did mine.

We’re suckers for prodigious voices over at Good Night Magazine and “Incoming Calls” definitely satisfied this reviewer’s sweet tooth. Repeating songs over and over again gets well, repetitive, but for some reason, every time I listened to this track, it felt like a brand new experience -- or even a brand new song. I guess rock music really is all about breaking all the rules.

All good things must come to an end, which must be why Self Defense Family saved their best song for last. After listening to”Cancel Man,” your heart may or may not beat in time with the drum -- all things in love beat in unison, right? Don’t worry, we totally dropped a couple things as we jammed out to the guitar parts, you’re not alone.

A couple singing birds chirped to us that the first 1,000 purchases of Duets are on 12-inch vinyl on clear with green and pink splatter, as well as solid pink, wax! The only thing cooler than that is this EP. So what are you waiting for, stop reading this and go grab it! Don’t forget to catch up with Self Defense Family at a town near you this October. Check their Facebook for all the deets.
