The Foxery - Useless

Heather Ronan | October 1, 2014

“The album is this narrative about walking into the depths of Hell, trudging through the bullshit for too long and then crawling out on our hands and knees.” This is how The Foxery describes their debut album Unless and I couldn’t find better words to describe it myself. It’s bleak, it’s depressing, and it will throw you into a deep dark hole of emotion and suffering, but that is everything they meant it to be.

The Louisville sextet open up the album with “(In)ferno,” a beautifully agonizing song that makes you realize straight away the type of album you are in for. The bass and guitar riffs and haunting vocals echo deep within you and shake free all those dark emotions you

have been trying to push down. It isn’t a very long song, but it never really leaves you after it ends.

“Broken Vessels” follows and is much more upbeat, well upbeat for the album at least. The lyrics are just as dark as the rest of the album but they are masked behind a faster tempo, so at least you come away from this song believing that you feel a little better inside. But just when you think the album may change pace, “The Sorrow” delivers a monologue to end all monologues. It’s dark, brooding and every line cuts deeper than the last and you’re right back where you started.

What really brings the album to a higher level is the intricacy of all the overlapping instruments. Both “The Filth” and “The Gnashing” have extended instrumental parts that you can tell weren’t just thrown together to fill a silence. Each feels like it has its own separate purpose to the album and each carries you along deeper through the journey.

To be honest, my first listen through Unless didn’t really catch me. It wasn’t until I realized that it wasn’t the type of album you just have playing in the background while you go about your doings that I discovered what I had here. It is one that changes you, morphs you, and unleashes things inside you never knew were there.  Just let the darkness of the album in and it will take you to places that you never knew music could.

You can download the album now on iTunes or grab a limited edition vinyl from Spartan Records. You can also follow them on Facebook for upcoming tour dates and other updates.
