This Wild Life - Clouded

Tyler Vesely | September 9, 2014

Looks like Jason Butler is going to have to make some room for the new beard in town. This Wild Life is comprised of Kevin Jordan and his tatted up band mate Anthony Del Grosso. However, do not let the beard and tattoos fool you. Behind the fuzzy mongrel on Kevin’s face is a great voice that is complimented perfectly by the acoustic style of music that he and Anthony make together. They released their debut album, Clouded, after signing with Epitaph and I have to say it was a phenomenal listen. This album is not strictly acoustic; it also has a tasteful orchestra in many of its songs, while some have full instrumentals.

Hailing from California, these two grew up in the hardcore scene, wanting to get in on the stage life. They started out with a pop punk band, but their music took a turn. Instead of following their predecessors, they decide to take a new direction and make their music a little more down to earth and personal. I honestly think not only have they achieved that in their album Clouded, but they are truly making waves in the music scene. They even made it onto the Warped Tour lineup last summer.

“Concrete” is the first song on the album and it starts the album off right. It will come off as a standard acoustic song with some singing from Kevin, but it will throw you a curve ball. As it reaches the chorus it really picks up and you will notice a nice touch of an orchestra added in.

“No More Bad Days” really hit home for me in particular. With its extremely soft melody and straight from the heart metaphors like, “I thought we hit rock bottom/ But then the floor gave out.” Unlike “Concrete,” this song is not as subtle with its orchestra. This is not a bad thing though, because it fits the mood of the song perfectly. This song could bring a man to tears, but only if no one is watching.

I would have to say that “Bound To Break” is my favorite song on the whole album. Almost strictly acoustic, it’s fast paced and I would say it’s pretty catchy. For the most part, the tempo is relatively the same through the entire song. I really enjoy the chanting in the background of the verse before the final chorus of the song.

This album is a nice change from the usual hardcore or post hardcore stuff I usually listen to. I was pleasantly surprised and if you haven’t heard it yet, you probably will be too. I like to treat a good album like a good movie so I won’t spoil anymore of it, so you’ll just have to check it out. I will tell you this, you will not be disappointed. This album has made it into my top 10 for 2014. I put it on full blast while I drive and just sing along. I don’t even care if the guy in the car next to me looks at me like I’m a dumbass. They are about to go on tour in the UK, so be sure to catch them! Go follow them on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Tumblr.
