You Blue It - Self Titled EP
Evan Cowles | July 29, 2014
You Blue It. Whether you think it’s cliché or creative, there’s no denying how amazing this Weezer tribute EP is. You Blew It!, the quintet from Orlando, FL, have never had a disappointing release, and this is no exception. Weezer’s self titled debut, otherwise known as The Blue Album, has been a staple in rock culture for 20 years now. So, naturally, some pretty big fans of the band decided to do a cover EP, and the results are wonderful. There’s no real point in actually diagnosing and reviewing the songs in and of themselves, because that has been done countless times over 20 years. Instead, I want to take a
look at what You Blew It! did to make the songs their own a bit.
“In The Garage” is the first song on the EP, and the first noticeable difference is the lack of harmonicas. Of course, this is far from a tragedy, nor does it take away from the wonderful song itself. While it’s still a Weezer song, You Blew It! still adds their own bit of flare by changing up a few of the instruments used in various places, and playing the songs as a whole a little more, while still keeping the songs close to the originals. Vocalist Tanner Jones does a phenomenal job of singing just like Rivers Cuomo throughout the entire EP.
“My Name Is Jonas” is the next. Right at the very beginning, we notice a subtle change from You Blew It! with the use of electric guitar instead of acoustic. I couldn’t really distinguish any other differences between the songs (besides the subtle differences in vocals), so I decided to listen to the songs simultaneously and that’s about the only damn difference between the songs. Which is good because, who would wanna change up “My Name Is Jonas?” They even kept the harmonica in towards the end.
Now, of all the songs on the EP, “Only In Dreams” was changed up the most. Either to fit You Blew It!’s style some more, or just to freshen it up, I’m not sure, but it’s still awesome. “Only In Dreams” isn’t exactly my favorite Weezer song, and I’m not particularly a fan of long songs either, so I really enjoyed what the band did to change up the song, and all the while still keep it close to Weezer. From the soft, mellow intro that continues halfway through to song, to the crescendo throughout, up until about the four minute mark, this song almost sounds like a Brand New cover. This might be my favorite song on the EP.
With the fourth song on the EP, “Surf Wax America,” You Blew It! almost made it sound like a surfer song. With the change in the tune of the guitar, to the less prominent drums, the You Blew It! cover sounds almost completely different.
And last but not least, we reach “Susanne.” While the original is a good ‘ole rockin’ love song, You Blew It! goes a completely different path and turns it into a straight up acoustic love song, and I applaud them for doing so. It really changes the whole light and focus of the song. You can't really go wrong with it, either.
You Blue It is a fantastic EP from start to finish, and anyone who's a fan of Weezer (so pretty much everyone) will love this EP as much as I did. While You Blew It! isn't going on tour right now, make sure to pay attention to any upcoming tour announcements they make, and do what you can to catch them live. They might just throw out one of these covers. If you wanna learn more about You Blew It!, listen to their music, or find out where they're touring, check out their Facebook, Bandcamp, and even their Tumblr.
